Rural America Initiatives acts as the fiscal agent for the Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention, Inc. (ASAP, Inc.) coalition serving the urban area of Rapid City, South Dakota, that has a population of 88,565. Established in 1985, ASAP is an all-volunteer, non-profit coalition that oversees coordinated prevention activities. To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and of strengthening community anti-drug coalitions, the ASAP coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) coordinate and develop a community-wide public awareness campaign and also disseminate locally-targeted prevention and awareness materials including television and radio Public Service Announcements, a customized Web-site, and materials for quarterly public forums;
2) conduct during- and after-school, life skills education groups targeting middle and senior high school students;
3) find treatment and aftercare for identified students;
4) establish a Resource Information Center at the public library to make current, accurate multimedia materials available to parents, educators, and community members; 5) increase the coalition's activities and actively recruit new members by presenting newly-created materials to businesses, civic service organizations, churches, and human service agencies.
