The primary purpose of the Sports Foundation, Inc. (SFI) Positive Alternative Program, is to delay (as long as possible) the age of first participation in harmful anti-social behavior by youth (12-18 years old) residing in the 16th Congressional District of the Bronx. It is designed to continue building on the success of the previously funded OJJDP programs, and to provide strong quantifiable positive alternative activities utilizing Risk & Protective intervention strategies that have been identified to be effective science-based youth development techniques. The ultimate Goal is to provide early intervention, and case management, in the lives of 50 targeted middle & high school aged boys & girls.

Project summary for 2000-JS-FX-0010 (S-2)
The purpose of the program is to continue to engage chronic and tardy and potential truants who are middle and high school students in structured workshops and sports activities in and effort to reduce truancy, improve academic performance and prevent delinquency. Each time participants gather as a group, they must attend a structured workshop before they can participate in any scheduled sports activities. The program will enroll at least 50 youth and the workshops will include; life skills seminars, quality option training, leadership development opportunities, violence prevention, conflict resolution, stress management, and individual and group mentoring activities.
