Pittsburgh's Gang Free Schools and Communities project will target violent youth gang members, ranging in age from 13 - 22, in the East End region of Pittsburgh, with intervention utilizing the OJJDP Comprehensive Gang Model & Enhanced School Component Structure. This project will implement the five strategies of the Comprehensive Gang Model: Community Mobilization, Social Intervention, Opportunity Provision, Suppression, and Organizational Change and Development. The project will enroll 50-100 gang involved youth, both in-school and out to accomplish these goals:
1.) Reduce the incidence of gang-involved crime in the East Region Target Area.
2.)Mobilize community residents and engage community stakeholders to counteract gang activity
3.) Reduce violent gang-involved activity in and around schools in the East Region Target Areas.
4.) Convene an intervention team to establish a structure for a continuum of coordinated services that address needs of gang-involved youth and to create a forum for sharing collected data on gang-involved activity among communities, schools, juvenile probation and adult probation divisions, law enforcement agencies and PPS police staff.
