FY 2003 Drug-Free Communities Support Program Application for Continuation Funding

The Mid City Community Advocacy Network serves the central region of the City of San Diego, CA, an urban area with a population of 168,125, which is 38.81% Hispanic, 30.9% White, 12.96% Black, 13.30% Asian, and 4.84% Other. The goals of the program are to: 1) reduce/prevent substance use among Mid City youth and over time among adults; and 2) enhance the structure and effectiveness of the Mid City Community Advocacy Network. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase youth's knowledge of ATOD, their associated risks, and build youth's communication, decision making, conflict resolution, and goal setting skills;
2) create ongoing supportive networks through peer mentoring that will help youth successfully move through school;
3) educate collaborative members on the usage and delivery of the project-developed ATOD curriculum in the delivery of related services, i.e., domestic violence, child abuse, etc.;
4) implement outreach efforts to the broader community to identify and to recruit additional at-risk youth;
5) provide parent education on the risks of substance abuse in an effort to increase parent's ability to discuss these issues with their children; and
6) involve more ethnic groups in promoting norms and standards against substance abuse.
