Award Information
Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government is the fiscal agent for the Mayor's Alliance on Substance Abuse Coalition. The coalition serves Lexington-Fayette County, an urban area in central Kentucky with a population of 261,000. In response to a growing Hispanic/Latino population, the Alliance has formed a Latino Task Force to comprehensively address substance use/abuse within the Hispanic/Latino community.
The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults by addressing the factors in a community that serve to minimize the risk of substance abuse; and 2) strengthen the collaboration among communities, governments, and private non-profit agencies to support community coalition efforts to prevent and to reduce substance abuse. To achieve those goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) complete a comprehensive needs assessment of the target population;
2) strengthen the Latino Task Force by increasing membership and by providing education to local service agencies regarding Mexican culture and traditions;
3) reduce substance abuse, focusing on alcohol and inhalants;
4) increase opportunities for Hispanic/Latino youth and families to participate in activities that promote bonding with peers, family, and the neighborhood;
5) sponsor alternative activities;
6) support clerk/server training and compliance checks; and
7) recruit new members and strengthen the community coalition. CA/NCF
