WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY JUVENILE DELINQUENCY PREVENTION PROJECT

The Western Kentucky University Juvenile Delinquency Prevention Project will provide structured activities for youth during out of school hours. The Alternative Elementary Program (for students in grade 1-5) and the Alternative to Suspension Program (for students in grade 6-12)will offer a disciplined educational setting with tutoring and counseling services for students during normal hours. Three After-School Programs with the Housing Authority of Bowling Green, Girls, Inc. of Bowling Green, and Bowling Green/ Warren County Community Education will offer academic tutoring along with recreational activities and field trips for students in kindergarden through tenth grade. The After School Programs will operate between the hours of 2:30 and 6:00pm, and will be available at low cost or free of charge to any children living in designed neighborhoods with a substantial portion of the population living below poverty level. The WKU Juvenile Delinquency Prevention Project is to continue to increase the accessibility of human services to families and individuals in need of assistance. The ALIVE Center serves as a clearinghouse of information to guide the public and to assist service providers in making referrals. The Director, Information Coordinator, Juvenile Services Coordinator, Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator and Project Assistance will work together at the Center and in the community to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of human services in the region.

The Western Kentucky University will continue to implement In Warren County, Kentucky its Spotlight Youth Project that provides structured activities for youth during out of school hours and the Alive Center that provides families and individuals with information and assists in making referrals to community based programs and services. The Spotlight Youth Project program strategy targets children with limited English proficiency and students whose absenteeism results in reading, science, math and writing deficiencies .The two fold approach consists of the Alternative to Suspension Program and the Alternative Elementary Program. Western Kentucky will also partner with Kentucky Child Now to pilot a statewide youth partnership initiative in Bowling Green, Lexington, and Louisville that will provide opportunities for youth to serve their community. The performance measures Western Kentucky University will report include the number of individuals receiving community information In the Alive Center and the increased attendance of students and their commitment to school for participants in the Project Youth Serve.NCA/NCF
