The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)will work with local and national community arts organizations to develop programming after-school and on weekends focused on educating at-risk Brooklyn young people about the intricacies of the criminal and juvenile justice system through literary and cinema arts. A partnership will be developed with the Redhook Youth Court in Brooklyn specifically focusing on the youthful offenders. BAM has extensive experience in creative education program development and is currently investigating opportunities with partners such as the Brooklyn Arts Council, Redhook Community Justice Center, and Sundance Institute. Programming already developed for previous years that will be extremely relevant in this context is a joint film-literary program centered on Reginald Rose's classic examination of courtroom deliberation and the role of the justice system in American society, 12 Angry Men. As part of the program, students will receive and read a copy of the play, watch Sidney Lumet's cinematic adaptation starring Henry Fonda, and participate in multiple in-school workshops offering extensive analysis led by BAM teaching artists. In order to make this experience an intensely personal one and encourage students to truly grapple with the themes central to 12 Angry Men, the program will also require participants to write scenes and monologues inspired by the work, which they would then act out with teaching artists.
