After School Counts
Reading and Math Instruction for Low-Performing K-8 Students

Chicago Public Schools will implement an "After School Counts" program, which will be made available to 187 Chicago elementary and middle schools (serving grades K-8) that do not currently qualify for Supplemental Educational Services funding. The program's goals are both to improve students' academic development and performance and to ensure students' safety and prevent delinquency by keeping children occupied during "at-risk" after school hours. The program's strategy includes offering intensive after school academic programming in reading and math for at least four hours a week for a minimum of 20 weeks during the school year. Chicago Public Schools' Office of After School and Community School Programs will report on performance outputs such as the number of participants and hours of programming. Performance measures will include students' grades, ITBS test scores, school attendance, and juvenile crime data.
