The Wayne County Department of Children and Family Services and Michigan State University Extension will establish a youth mentoring program to serve approximately 40 currently undeserved, at-risk youth in the Greater Detroit area. This initiative will enlist 40 adults to be one to one or small group mentors to approximately 40 low-income, at-risk youth aged 10-17 during out of school hours. It will emphasize helping young people improve their academic performance, improve relationships with peers and adults, reduce school delinquency rates, and develop skills that will prepare them for successful futures in the work force. The work proposed by this project will provide a strong foundation of on-going efforts in Wayne County to ensure that age appropriate and culturally competent services and resources are available for youth.
