Award Information
The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 1974, as amended. The purpose of this program is to support State and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements. Program areas may include: Planning and administration; State Advisory Group allocation; compliance monitoring; juvenile justice issues for American Indian tribes; prevention of substance abuse by juveniles; prevention of serious and violent crimes by juveniles; prevention of juvenile gang involvement and illegal youth gang activities; prevention of delinquent acts and identification of youth at risk of delinquency; and improvement of juvenile justice system operations, policies, and procedures including establishing a system of graduated sanctions, treatment programs, and aftercare.
The Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) administers the Title II Formula Grant funds for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Commonwealth's goals and objectives will continue to focus on providing a safe environment for juveniles throughout the juvenile justice system, while complying with the Commonwealth's statutory and federal requirements. FY 2011 Formula Grant award funds will primarily be dedicated to addressing compliance with the Sight and Sound separation requirement. Specifically, the Commonwealth will identify and target court holding facilities that have the most significant problems. To that end the Commonwealth has largely completed the identification process of courts under its purview, conducted site visits to courts, and taken note of some of the specific problems that individual courts present. Future activities include meetings with key stakeholders in order to develop a thorough strategy and timetable and garner a firm commitment to ameliorating the problem as quickly as resources and various, difficult logistical matters will allow.
