Development of a National Mentoring Resource Center

Building on the foundation established in year one, MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership (MENTOR) will fully launch and ensure sustainability of the National Mentoring Resource Center (NMRC) in year two. The NMRC will be developed as a practical, comprehensive and accessible resource that the mentoring field needs to bridge research to practice. To achieve the goals of the NMRC in its continued development, the team will: 1) Adhere to a work plan and timeline to ensure accomplishment of key goals and consistent communication with OJJDP; 2) Maintain and enhance an OJJDP NMRC website, including Research Board reviewed programs and resources and online communities of practice; 3) Conduct ongoing assessment of mentoring programs and gaps in resources through Mentoring Partnerships' current local activities and assessing use of the NMRC website; 4) Disseminate evidence-based mentoring practice information through the NMRC website, on-the-ground technical assistance, and the development of a curriculum of standard trainings with the Research Board and 40 technical assistance providers, who will be convened at a national train-the-trainer session; 5) Deliver online trainings to advance evidence-based strategies and tools in areas where an identified need exists, particularly leveraging the monthly Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series; and 6) Provide tools and practical techniques for collaboration among mentoring organizations and across disciplines, particularly leveraging Mentoring Partnerships, the Senior Advisors on Youth Development and Mentoring and the NMRC Stakeholder Council. The NMRC will also develop resources to support the My Brother's Keeper initiative and other OJJDP programs including Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children sites and Children of Incarcerated Parents demonstration programs. MENTOR will work with OJJDP to determine approaches, which may include special sessions at the National Mentoring Summit, developing new trainings, and creating online communities of practice on the NMRC website. The NMRC will also partner with OJJDP mentoring initiatives such as Children of Incarcerated Parents COIP), Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children initiative (CSEC), and My Brothers Keeper. Description
The National Mentoring Partnership, Inc.(MENTOR) has served as the unifying champion for expanded quality youth mentoring in the United States for 23 years. From this experience and infrastructure, MENTOR proposes to establish a state-of-the-art National Mentoring Resource Center (NMRC) for OJJDP to improve the quality and impact of mentoring nationwide by creating effective bridges among research, capacity building, and practice. MENTOR and its national network of Mentoring Partnerships, leading youth development organizations, and preeminent mentoring researchers will collaborate to better ensure mentoring practitioners are equipped to implement evolving evidence-based practices maximizing optimal youth outcomes. This team is uniquely positioned to develop and sustain the NMRC, furthering OJJDP's commitment to advance the implementation of evidence- and research-based mentoring practices. To achieve the goals of a comprehensive NMRC, the team will: 1) establish and maintain a dynamic, user-friendly NMRC Website engaging a Research Board to rigorously review 50 plus resources for inclusion in a "What Works" section; 2) assess the needs of mentoring programs and gaps in evidence-based mentoring resources through technical assistance and utilizing MENTOR's Quality Mentoring System program assessment; 3) provide and disseminate evidence-based practice information through the Website, a national train-the-trainer seminar, and ongoing local trainings from trusted leaders; 4) develop an online resource clearinghouse; 5) develop and deliver online and onsite trainings advancing evidence-based strategies and tools to meet identified gaps; and 6) provide tools, practical techniques, and local settings for collaboration among mentoring organizations and diverse disciplines, contributing to improved coordination of mentoring services for youth. Progress on performance measures will be assessed through pre- and post-surveys for mentoring organizations, and data will be aggregated quarterly from the NMRC Web site and onsite assessments.
