The W. Haywood Burns Institute (the BI) proposes a technical assistance and training project aimed at effectively reducing racial and ethnic disparities (RED) in juvenile justice systems. This project seeks to achieve the following goals: (1) Assist state, local, and/or tribal governments in implementing reduction programs to address RED; (2) Improve the training and education of professionals addressing RED in juvenile justice systems at the state and local levels to develop their capacity to foster systems change; and (3) Identify promising and evidence-based strategies that have a sound theoretical basis and/or have demonstrated measurable success in reducing racial and ethnic disparities. Description
With OJJDP funding, the W. Haywood Burns Institute and the Center for Children's Law Policy will provide a training and technical assistance program aimed at more effectively reducing racial and ethnic disparities in juvenile justice systems that will serve to: aid with the development of a collaboration of key stakeholders locally for systems change; identify key decision points in the system where disparities occur; collect and analyze data at various decision points and provide alternatives to incarceration; develop and implement plans to reduce racial and ethnic disparities; and monitor and evaluate the program's progress.
